“The Family” – Original created in graphite (pencil)
Limited Edition of 500
Printed in black/white (grey scale)
Size 7 by 19 inches. Price $20.00

I created this piece to share with you an incredible experience I had during the summer of 1994. I was blessed with the opportunity to closely observe a family of Loons as they raised their two chicks at Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham, New Hampshire. I came upon “the family” as I was canoeing early one spring morning. For reasons unknown to me, the loons were not threatened by my presence and I spent most of that summer closely watching and documenting this wonderful gift. This work is one of many which were created that summer—thanks to “The Great Loon—Ranger in the sky!

“Great Blue” – Original created in graphite (pencil)
Limited Edition of 200
Printed in black/white (grey scale)
Size 18 by 26 inches. Price $40.00

On a warm summer morning on Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham, New Hampshire, I came upon this Great Blue Heron looking for breakfast. I drifted slowly toward him in my canoe and he was so intent on his mission that he was not bothered by my presence. The sun was just rounding the brush by the shoreline and was illuminating the heron and some of the landscape. The beauty of the light patterns that were forming fascinated me and I have tried to capture that moment for you.

“The Breadline” – Original created in watercolor
Limited Edition of 400
Printed in color, Giclee process
Size 19 by 10 inches. Price $65.00

These Canada Geese became trapped as winter quickly closed in and the marsh froze over. They had taken "hand-outs" from humans all summer, abandoning their own wild ways of feeding for the easy bread meal offered by well-meaning humans.

I painted them without eyes because the eyes reflect the soul—and these geese no longer had a wild soul.

Now they were prisoners of "The Bread Line".

“Loonheart” – Original created in watercolor
Limited Edition of 200
Printed in color, Giclee process
Size 19 by 14 inches. Price $75.00

In 1997, I spent time on Pawtuckaway Lake observing the magnificent Common Loon and was inspired to create this piece and the accompanying poem. I titled this piece after the Ojibwee saying “Mahn go taysee” meaning Heart of the Loon.

A Soulful Glimpse into a Private Moment

The Loon is secretive and mysterious.

Even with the intrusion of man into its precious territory, still—the Loon remains apart from humans, unlike ducks and geese, which live WITH man. The Loon and I are alike in heart, because—though I AM human (not of my own choosing) I too—in heart, soul, and mind—live apart from man and an unjust society.

"I live within the mysterious Loon as it dives deep, wails its mournful call across a quiet lake: a sound more beautiful than any music of man."
