ABOUT JUDY I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of New Hampshire in Durham and studied under professors John Hatch, Mel Zabarsky, Bruno Civitico and Sigmund Abeles. My medium of choice was oil, but I have since begun to work in watercolor and pastel, enjoying the immediacy of the medium. My work has appeared in juried shows all over the United States and can be seen and purchased at several New England locations. I am a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association, Durham Art Association, Newburyport Art Association, Seacoast Art Association and a national and state member of the Womens’ Caucus on Art. In 2004 and 2005 my work was chosen as part of the Annual New Hampshire Art Association Exhibition hosted by the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire. This exhibition features the work of talented and accomplished artists and includes works in a variety of mediums. In 2004 my mixed media work, “Rising” was chosen and in the 2005 exhibition my pastel work entitled “Refraction” won the Gammon Award which is given to the best piece in the drawing category. In 2005, my work, “Fall on Big Four” appeared on the Families First—Artists of the Seacoast calendar and was published as a note card for their fundraising. This calendar supported the Families First Health and Support Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Most recently, I had a solo show at the Seacoast Art Association Gallery in Exeter, New Hampshire and in the Lassonde New England Juried Show at the Levy Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Upcoming shows will be Juried New Hampshire Pastel Society New England Exhibit at Red Roof Gallery in Enfield, New Hampshire (June 1, 2007 through July 14, 2007) and at the East Room Levy Gallery Portsmouth, New Hampshire (Sept 1 – Sept 30, 2007). Along with a Bachelor in Fine Arts, I have a minor in Art Education and teach both pastel and watercolor to small groups at my Nottingham studio. I was widowed at age 38 and had to put my art career on hold in order to provide for my two young sons-a labor of love! While working as a part time police officer, I was severely injured fighting a pit bull dog. After many surgeries to my back and shoulder and lots of hardware, I am left with chronic pain and constant back spasms, which have restricted my active lifestyle dramatically. My art has become my anchor and my sanity. I paint the world I so love, that of nature and wildlife that share this Earth with us and in so doing—I paint out of my pain and into that beauty I so humbly try to portray. My mission is to raise awareness of the beauty of the fragile world around us in hope that people will respect and preserve this Earth for all life. |
